How to avoid smoking?

Everybody knows that smoking is injurious to health and is likely to cause cancer. Nobody will say he does not like to quit smoking.  But very few have the will and determination to quit.
How can you really quit smoking?
Just follow these steps:
  • anticipate the challenges and plan everything
  • tell your family, friends, co-workers, etc that you are quitting smoking
  • remove all tobacco products from your home and work-place
  • talk to your doctor about your plans to quit and discuss possible after-effects
  • If you crave for a cigarette after every meal, replace that moment with a healthy dessert, a piece of fruit, a square of chocolate or a stick of gum
  • If you are a social smoker, let your friends and family members know that you have quit smoking and you do not like them to smoke in your company
  • If you habitually smoke while drinking tea or coffee, drink where smoking is prohibited and replace cigarettes with some snacks.

What happens when you quit smoking?           
For a few days

  • you may have strong headaches
  • you may feel dizzy
  • you may experience restlessness
  • you may also have a bigger appetite

What can you do then?

  • If you are not a diabetic, you can drink plenty of juice and keep your sugar levels high to keep these sugar-related cravings in control.
  • Stay active, distracted and occupied and go for walks and the like
  • Keep your hands and fingers busy with squeeze balls, pencils, paper clips, etc to satisfy the need for tactile stimulation.
  • Keep your mind busy, reading books, listening to music, viewing movies, etc.
  • Find an oral substitute and keep it nearby, like mints, hard candy, carrot sticks, celery sticks, gum or sunflower seeds.
  • Drink lots of water to flush out toxins from your body.  This will help minimize withdrawal symptoms and help cravings pass faster.

Your body will readjust within a few days.
Remember that avoiding smoking is your fight against yourself and you have no one to blame if you are the loser.
